4.5 years and 3 babies later, I finished. I earned my Masters in Business Administration. I started the program when Sullivan was six months old. I went to school full time and worked for the MBA department part time. Grandma Margaret would watch Sullivan once a week and your Dad would stay home with him the other day that I worked. Shortly after I started the program I found out I was pregnant with Sela. It was not an easy pregnancy, and the stress that was generated from all of the false alarms, doctor's appointments and ultrasounds proved to be too much. At the suggestion of my Dr., I dropped down to one class and had to give up my Graduate Student Appointment for the rest of the program. At that point I had 6 classes left. I took one class every few quarters until this last year when I did a final push and finished the remaining three.
I love education. School is tough, and I know it's not for everyone. My hope for you, my sweet kiddos, is not that you learn the importance of education from me, but rather the importance of setting a goal and finishing it. Because let me tell you, it feels amazing. All of that hard work, all of those late nights, and now I have something that is mine. No one can ever take it away from me. More important than the title though, I was able to prove to myself that I could do it, and that knowledge feeds into everything that you do in life. So yes, I can analyze financial statements, write a business plan or develop marketing strategies. But more important than all of the knowledge that was gained in the program, was the further development of self-efficacy. I knew I was capable of accomplishing things before, but milestones like these continue a person's propulsion forward. Your journeys will be unique and beautiful. I hope that no matter what path you choose, you never stop pushing, never stop learning and never stop setting goals for yourselves. You are capable of extraordinary things and I hope that each goal you set, and milestone you reach, continues to prove to you just how capable you truly are.
