Hooked on Books

Sullivan's music teacher said that it was important to make music a part of everyday life and the more exposure our children have to music the more they will embrace and understand it and hopefully develop a great love for it.  She even suggested leaving their music books out for their viewing so that they could become familiar with sheet music.  I applied this approach to books in general for Sullivan.  I figured if I just left them out it might help generate a love of reading.  For the first few months he took great pleasure in pulling the books off of the coffee table onto the floor one by one but not a page was turned.  But we just kept on reading to him and letting him play with his books even if they were more often used as weapons that could be hurled across the room.  Little by little he began to look through the pages on his own and by the time his first birthday rolled around he was hooked and it is the sweetest thing.

Sullivan's most common request during the day is for us to read to him and we are happy to oblige.  And since Sela is adverse to being nearly anywhere but my arms these days she is right there with us reading 'Farm Babies', 'I Love My Mommy Because' (my personal favorite), 'Where is baby's bellybutton' and nearly a hundred others.  Hopefully it will be an interest they can share for years to come.
