This week was hard. The kiddos got their shots and it was heartbreaking to say the least. Sullivan is at that perfectly imperfect age where he is aware of his surroundings but not quite old enough for us to fully explain what is happening. So Brian held him and had to watch as those big beautiful brown eyes swelled up with tears unable to explain why we weren't stopping this from happening. I could feel Brian's heart breaking. Sullivan was a champ and once he received his tongue compressor with a picture of Buzz Lightyear attached to it he was feeling much better. Sela fared better during the appointment but has since been feeling pretty lousy. My kids seem to know when one is having a hard time because the other one toughens up as to let their sibling have a chance to work out their difficulty. Perhaps they inherently know that if they were both to have a meltdown at the same time I would just meltdown right there with them.
Sela was awake for a good portion of the night and had a temperature of 101.2 and even though all of my books said that was ok I still called the triage nurse at 2am and waited on hold for 45 minutes just to hear her say that her reaction was perfectly normal. 2am isn't my most rational time of the day.
Before we even went to sleep that night I told Brian I could sense that it was going to be a rough one and I very seriously contemplated pulling an all nighter because choosing to be awake for 24 hours straight is somehow much better than trying to fall asleep and getting woken up over and over and over again. I ended up choosing to attempt sleep. It was not a success.
Even though the days after their shots were filled with a lot of fussing, short naps and a level of exhaustion I was sure I wouldn't survive, there were also a ton of little everyday moments I wouldn't trade for anything:
Sullivan worked on refining his cup drinking, door opening and reading skills, all of which provided a great source of entertainment and pride.
The kiddos just hanging out together and Sela waking up happy just long enough for a quick photo shoot.
Bath time and doing our hair just like Daddy's.
And then of course Daddy coming home....
Even though it was tough there were still a lot of smiles and laughs between the crying and exhaustion. Plus, we always know that we can try to do a little better tomorrow.
